About Us

Serving All Of Our Community

Early in 2011 a group of mental health professionals, all long-time colleagues working together in a rural community, began a process of collaboration for the purpose of pursuing a responsive and fiscally responsible model of service to the region.

In the midst of a growing socioeconomic crisis, we saw the need for a more egalitarian and cooperative model of business as crucial to our own livelihoods and as ideal in providing sustainable services to our community.

Center Point Counseling Services Cooperative is the result of this collaboration – the first centralized mental health cooperative in the nation. Our business is based on the worker cooperative model, first developed in the late 1800’s. We also espouse a servant leadership philosophy of management, which works well in a cooperative setting where collaboration with, and support by and for the community we serve, is practiced.

Late in 2011, we purchased building space in Viroqua, Wisconsin. Viroqua is a town of 4,400 and the central hub of Vernon County, a part of the geographically unique driftless region. Our county is well known for its rolling high ridges and valleys of picturesque farm lands and hardwood forests. Viroqua itself is amazingly diverse in its population. Many professionals, artists, musicians and retirees enjoy the beauty of the area along with many farmers; Amish, conventional, and organic. We are one of the economically challenged counties in an already struggling state. Yet, we are thriving culturally in many ways. There is a richness of activity, and community support and innovation. Almost every weekend there is more than one art or entertainment venue to choose from. And, the mix of diverse residents and guests are found working or playing together everywhere. There is a remarkable spirit of cooperation and community sustainability within the region. Many initiatives are in various stages of development and cooperatives are not new to our area.

This is the community and region we serve and draw our strength from. Like most diverse communities, we also have our share of challenges. Substance abuse, especially alcohol abuse is a serious problem in the state as a whole. As in many rural economically challenged regions, many struggle with depression and anxiety problems. And, we certainly have the array of other mental health issues present in any human population. These are the people we serve. With over a hundred years of clinical experience between the nine clinicians, as well as the many years of experience of our three administrators, we work with a wide array of individuals with many differing mental health challenges. In coordination with our local county human services department, we offer emergency mental health services; provide coordination and treatment services for the county’s Sobriety Court and Intensive Sanctions programs; and we have an extensive substance abuse program run by four of our clinicians who are trained and licensed in the field of substance abuse treatment.

Center Point Counseling Services Cooperative is the outcome of a community in collaboration. It is also the creation of a group of professionals investing in themselves, in each other, and their community.
